Lesleigh was appointed to our Board in May 2019 and became Chair in May 2020. She has a long-established career in the health and social care sector, as a commissioner of adult, young people, and family services for substance misuse, offending, and mental health across Kent and London councils. She is currently director of strategic operations for a London-based homelessness charity. She has successfully delivered a number of high profile central government programmes and is vastly experienced in capacity building, growing services while delivering against ambitious targets, developing new business models, retaining projects in challenging funding environments, and organisational change management.
Treasurer and Vice Chair
Katharine was appointed to Cranstoun’s Board as a Trustee in January 2006 as Honorary Treasurer. She is also the Chair of the Audit Committee. Katharine is an ACA qualified accountant and currently a Partner at Buzzacott LLP. She has worked with Buzzacott for over 15 years, starting her career with them as a trainee accountant. Throughout that time, Katharine has worked with charitable organisations ranging from convents to universities to international development charities. Most of her time is spent overseeing the audit process for these charities and providing financial advice.
Dr. Franklin Apfel
Franklin Apfel is a medical doctor and the Managing Director (and founding partner) of World Health Communication Associates. Current work focuses on building public health capacity to communicate risks and make healthier choices easier. Previously, he has worked as Head of Communications for the WHO Regional Office for Europe (Copenhagen), Primary Health Care Fellow of the King’s Fund (London), Regional Director for Central and Eastern Europe Project HOPE (Bratislava), a General Practitioner and medical director/CEO of California Health Leadership Inc. (Ukiah) and Director of the Lincoln Hospital People’s Detoxification Center, an early methadone programme (The Bronx). Franklin is a frequent moderator, facilitator, and presenter at public health meetings in Europe and beyond.
Cees was appointed to Cranstoun’s Board as a Trustee in 2003. He has had a distinguished career with the World Health Organisation (WHO), undertaking work related to substance abuse, mental health and health in prisons. Cees acted for several years as the Director of Health Promotion and Disease Prevention and developed the European Alcohol Action Plan and the WHO’s ‘Health in Prisons Project’. Since his retirement from the European Office of the WHO, he lives in Vienna and is a freelance public health consultant with assignments of several governments, the WHO, the EC and UNODC.
Wayne works as an Interim Programme/Project Manager and has worked with a number of local authorities on their health and social care transformation and integration agendas. Before this, he served almost 25 years in the RAF, followed by a brief spell in policing. Wayne joined Cranstoun as a Trustee in 2010 because he wanted to contribute on a more regular, meaningful basis to an organisation where his experiences might be most useful.
Tom Rutherford (Swanswell)
Tom is a consultant practising in the arena of sustainable investing. For over 20 years he worked for global investment firms and has substantial experience working with charities and advising on their investments, with a particular focus on aspects of social responsibility. He is a member of the Chartered Institute for Securities and Investment and Associate of the UK Society of Investment Professionals. He joined the Swanswell Board of Trustees in 2011.
Andrew Furlong (Swanswell)
Sue has a well-established career within HR and Learning & Development, working with SMEs to help them build both their service and people reputation. She has a particular focus on employee engagement, workplace culture and helping senior leaders develop a people agenda that supports and enhances their organisational strategy. Alongside her own business, she is also an Investors in People Practitioner. Sue joined our Board in July 2019 with a keen desire to contribute to our core purpose in a meaningful way.
Hugh is managing director of the healthcare division of Clever Together, a consultancy firm which uses large scale online ‘crowdsourced’ conversations to give leaders insight into what their staff or their stakeholders think, supporting performance improvement, culture change and innovation. Hugh is passionate about health and care having held a number of senior roles at the pharmacy regulator, the General Pharmaceutical Council, where he was director of strategy, the General Medical Council and the NHS Confederation. Like many connected with Cranstoun, Hugh has seen the effects of addiction on individuals and families and is passionate about helping the charity to continue to deliver high-quality services.
David was appointed to Cranstoun’s Board of Trustees in May 2019. He has worked in the charity, private and government sectors at Addaction, Scope, Unilever, PA Consulting, Serco and Agilisys over the last 30 years. His focus is on leading change through sound business planning and project/programme management. He now works as an interim/contract manager and executive coach.
